Senator Percy Malone was injured shortly before 7 p.m. Tuesday evening in an accident on Interstate 30 just inside the Hot Spring County line.
Arkansas State Police Senior Cpl. Mark Batson said this morning that the investigation into the accident is ongoing, but that early indications were that Malone had probably struck the rear of an 18-wheeler. Batson said that there was “minor contact” between Malone’s vehicle and the 18-wheeler.
“He then skidded off the roadway and into the treeline,” Batson said.
Malone was the only person injured in the accident, according to Batson.
“His injuries were serious enough that Air Evac took him to St. Joseph’s in Hot Springs,” Batson said.
Malone’s wife, Donna, confirmed this morning from St. Joseph’s that Malone was in stable condition and that he’d suffered a broken leg in the accident. She said that, as of 8:30 today, he was awaiting surgery for the injuries.
The air bag deployed during the accident and Donna said that Malone “looked bad” from those injuries, but that the only pain he was complaining of was in his leg.
“He’s okay,” she said.
Malone had been in Arkadelphia for a meeting that began at 4 p.m. where he addressed a group gathered to discuss the Clark County Strategic Plan. During that meeting, Malone had said he would have to leave early, citing an engagement in Eureka Springs.
Donna confirmed that he was alone in the vehicle and said there was a light rain at the time of the accident.
