Overcast skies filled the backdrop as the Go Devils took on the Mineral Springs Hornets and the Devils would leave the field every bit as cloudy, giving up the game to the Hornets, 18-6.
The game began with a moment of silence to remember the events from eight years ago.
Captains Drew Griffin and Kody Dickerson met at mid field for the coin toss. Mineral Springs won the toss and received first. The Hornets fumbled on the first drive, with Gurdon recovering. But the Go Devils could not get anything going their first drive and turned the ball over on downs. The Gurdon defense stepped up once again the next series forcing a four and out with Mineral Springs turning the ball over. On Gurdon’s next drive some good runs by Keonta McClelland and Keon Holliman was negated by penalties and a turnover. Holliman fumbled on the 16-yard line was returned 47 yards but was brought back by block in the back penalty by Mineral Springs. The first quarter ended tied at 0.
It didn’t take the Hornets long to score in the second quarter when on fourth and one they rushed for a 32-yard touchdown run.
With 10:03 in the half Mineral Springs led by 6. Gurdon moved the ball the next series that stalled out before turning the ball over on downs with just over 5 minutes remaining in the half. Mineral Springs moved the ball quickly down the field to the Gurdon 36-yard line when a little bit of luck stuck. On fourth and 11, the center snapped the ball to the quarterback who was not looking, the ball hit the ground and bounced right back to him. In the confusion, Gurdon’s defense did not cover and the quarterback threw to a wide open receiver for a 36-yard touchdown pass. Mineral Springs tried for two, but failed bringing the score 0-12 with 2:09 remaining in the half. Gurdon couldn’t move the ball as the half ended.
Gurdon was forced to punt their opening drive to start the third quarter. The punt was returned 55 yards by Shaun Richardson for a Hornet touchdown. Mineral Springs went up 0-18 with 9:30 in the third.
