Trust me when I say that I care.
I also know how tough transition can be, but students get in band because they love music. That has to be the main reason. Things are always changing in this world but how music can affect you and others has been in place since the beginning of time. Music is something you can do in some capacity until you have taken your last breath. The Gurdon School district has done a good job of trying to help students so they can play in athletics and still take other subjects such as band or choir. The students have to take advantage of this. Parents should encourage their children to be in as many activities as possible.
In the Camden Fairview high school band I have several students who are also in the choir, play football, golf, journalism, volley ball, Junior ROTC., student council, dance team, cheerleaders, and other activities. It does make it a little tough sometimes but what I have is a bunch of students who are very active in school, not in trouble, making very good grades and good citizens. The main point I’m trying to say is students get involved.
There are several students giving in to peer pressure and not involved in activities because their friend is not there or a particular teacher is not there. Gurdon Schools has several very talented and capable people who teach our young people, (my child included) and students should take advantage of it.
Parents can help, encourage your child to be active. Trust me, I know from 22 years of teaching , students that are very active in their school activities are better prepared for life outside of high school. Although I’m not teaching here anymore, I care very much about the Gurdon Public Schools and I wish everyone well, I care.
