DEGRAY COMMUNITY — A Clark County resident was killed Friday in a late night house fire, according to Clark County Coroner Tim Welch.
The victim, whose identity is pending positive identification from the state Crime Laboratory, apparently died of smoke inhalation, Welch said. The body appears to be that of a 71-year-old white female, he added.
Arkadelphia firefighters were dispatched to a mobile home at 535 Lower Lake Road Friday at about 10:30 p.m. to assist the DeGray Volunteer Fire Department with a home that was fully engulfed in flames. The sheriff’s office received a 911 call from an unknown caller at about 10:15 p.m., Sheriff Jason Watson said. Watson said he spoke with a DeGray firefighter who arrived at the scene first and reported the kitchen area was fully engulfed upon arrival. The firefighter reportedly tried opening the front door, but that the home’s interior was too hot to enter. Watson noted that the fire “spread very fast” throughout the mobile home.
No foul play is suspected in the fire, according to the sheriff’s office.
“There is nothing indicative of arson,” Sgt. Brian Daniel, criminal investigator for the Clark County Sheriff’s Office, said.
Watson said the official cause of the fire was still under investigation Monday morning. It was not known at press time what started the fire or where the fire originated. No one else was in the home when the fire was reported, Watson said. The victim, whom Welch pronounced dead at 11:33 p.m., was found in a rear bedroom, Watson said.
