A Prescott woman has been charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of a minor after one of her children was mauled and killed by a pit bull.
Leslie Leann Strickland, 22, 188 Nevada 250, Prescott, was charged on Jan. 19 in Nevada County District Court.
According to records on file with the Nevada County Circuit Clerk’s office, Strickland and her children were “staying with friends” at a Bemis Street residence in Prescott on Oct. 28. Two of Strickland’s children, a 2-year-old boy and a 3-year-old boy, apparently got out of the house and wandered down the road while Strickland was still asleep.
According to the court records, Prescott Police Detective David Thomason was the first to respond to a 911 call reporting that a dog had attacked a child. Upon arrival at the scene, Thomason reportedly discovered Strickland’s 2-year-old son, Matthew Hurt. According to information filed by Arkansas State Police Investigator Ocie Rateliff, “the child had several lacerations on and around the throat.” Thomason reportedly checked for vital signs and found that the child had a pulse upon his arrival. The toddler was taken by medical flight to a Little Rock hospital and information later that day indicated that the child had died from his injuries.
