It’s that time of year again, baseball season. The great American pastime has always been a treasured source good family fun and the Gurdon Baseball and Softball Association has just the thing to get the season kicked off. The Annual “Jamboree” is slated for Saturday, April 17 at Cabe Field.
The event will include some traditional favorites including inflatables for the kids, face painting and raffles. There will also be food concessions available including hamburgers and hotdogs for lunch and smoked chicken plates for super.
The Air-Vac helicopter is tentatively scheduled to land at the field and guests will be invited for an up-close view.
The Hit-A-Thon is back again for the second year. For this event, kids from the various teams will be going around Gurdon in search of pledges. Donors may promise to pay a specific amount for yards hit by the team member they sponsor, or may make a one-time donation.
All proceeds will help with funding for repairs and additions for the park. The individual with the most money raised will be award four tickets to an Arkansas Razorback baseball game.
Leah Rhodes, one of the coordinators of the event, said the event has taken off in the past couple of years.
“People look forward to our kickoff of the spring baseball season,” said Rhodes. “We just want to encourage everyone to come out and help support our efforts to get everyone more involved.”
The day’s events will kickoff with several games, including 7 and 8-year-old girls at 8 a.m., with boys and tee-ball starting as well. The Hit-A-Thon will be starting at 4 p.m.
This year a new event is sure to have everyone talking. The first “Ole’ Timmers game is slated to start at 6 p. m. This event has over 50 local men on four teams vying for one traveling trophy. Team names include the Hazbeens, Use to B’s, Wanna B’s and Never Was. There will also be jars set up so that donations can be made to your favorite player.
“It will be a good time for everyone and these guys are taking this serious, which makes it that much better,” said Rhodes.
There is a $1 admission to the event, again with an ultimate goal of trying to raise money for the park.
