Despite several fumbles throughout the game, the Gurdon Go-Devils had no trouble with the Genoa Central Dragons as they handed their opponent at 35-0 shutout in their season opener Friday night at home.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Go-Devils were able to get on the scoreboard early in the second quarter after a Genoa Central player was dropped in the end zone for a safety.
The Dragons kicked off at their own 20. Micah McKillion returned the ball to the Dragon 47 after catching it around the Gurdon 40.
Earnest Young brought the ball to the Dragon 26, before Genoa Central’s defense forced a 2nd-and-10.
Gurdon’s DJ Anna found Thomas Stockdale near the end zone for a Gurdon touchdown. Fernando Garcia’s PAT split the uprights to give Gurdon a 9-0 lead with 10:03 remaining in the first half.
An unsuccessful drive by Genoa Central forced a punt, and the Go-Devils picked up at midfield.
A Gurdon fumble was recovered by Genoa Central at the Gurdon 47. However, the Go-Devils offense went back to the field after a fumble by the Dragons was recovered by Kelton Anderson.
Young brought the ball to the 49 yard line to bring up a 2nd-and-9. Stockdale was stopped by Remi Bearden after a Go-Devil first down at the 38 yard line.
Jameson Threadgill tacked on two more yards before a penalty for offsides moved Gurdon to the Dragon 31.
Young advanced the ball four yards for a first down. Another Gurdon fumble was recovered by the Go-Devils, but not before a loss of yardage to bring up 2nd-and-11.
Antonio Dickens was stopped at the 26. Anna found a hole in the field and rushed to the 16 yard line. A flag for unsportsmanlike conduct against Genoa Central moved the ball to the 8 yard line.
Another fumble was recovered by Gurdon at the 5 yard line to bring up 2nd-and-5. Anna would go on to score another touchdown with 2:27 remaining in the quarter. The PAT was blocked and the Go-Devils held on to a 15-0 halftime lead.
Dickens scored another touchdown late in the third quarter. Garcia’s kick was good to give Gurdon a 22-0 lead.
The Dragons took over at their own 33 yard line. Colby Cobb was stopped by the Gurdon defense after a one-yard gain.
After not making any sufficient gains, Gurdon’s Royrick Anderson blocked a punt attempt by the Dragons. Isaiah Harper picked up the ball and made it to the 15-yard line.
Caleb Redford was topped by the three-yard line. Harper managed to give the Go-Devils an extra cushion when he reached the end zone with 30.8 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
The PAT was perfect to give Gurdon a 29-0 lead at the end of the quarter.
Gurdon’s final touchdown of the game came at the 8:00 mark when Threadgill scored. The PAT was no good as Gurdon took a 35-0 lead and win by invoking the mercy rule.
The Go-Devils will look to rack up another win on the road this Friday night against the Haskell Harmony Grove Cardinals. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
