A basketball fan could not have gone wrong by attending Monday night’s Gurdon vs Foreman basketball games held at Gurdon High School.
The night started out with a bang as the junior Devils battled it out with the junior Gators, but the Gators got the edge after one period.
Gurdon quickly made up for lost time in the second period, adding 13 while holding the visiting team to four for a 22-14 lead at halftime.
Both teams came out hot in the third stanza, hitting 14 points each to lock in the Gator deficit for another six minutes, but with the fourth quarter pressure on, the Gators could not handle the ball well enough to top the Devils who outscored the visiting team 16-7 in the final period for a 52-35 final.
Naja Hawthorne led the Devils with 22 points in the game. Dewayne Marlowe added 11 while Alunzo Leeper saw eight. Adam Cooper put up six points, Cameron Mayhue and David Sims had two and Brandon Beals one.
The team will not be back in action until after their holiday break. They will face off against Mineral Springs at home following the seventh grade girls game.
Varsity Girls
The second game of the night was not as successful for Devil fans as the Lady Devils fell to the Lady Gators 57-13.
Foreman went on a 24-point run that was unanswered until the second period. It was 20-0 after one and 29-2 at the half.
The Lady Devils got it together in the third period, adding eight, but Foreman went on to add 25 to seal the team’s fate,
54-10.

The thriller was back and forth, despite the Devils taking at least a 10 point lead three different times.
Gurdon won the first period, outscoring Foreman 17-11, and the margin was narrowed at the half as Foreman put up 19 while Gurdon added 17, 34-30.
The margin continued to shrink as the teams battled it out until the end. Foreman added 20 in the third to cut the Gurdon lead to three, 53-50, and another 25 points left the Gators behind by one for the 76-75 final. Gurdon took a three point lead in the final seconds, but a deuce by Foreman cut the lead to one at the buzzer.
Juan Williams led the team with 26 points. Dion Hawthorne put up 18 while Deonco Sorrells added 11. Other scorers included Braylon Samuels with eight, Ladarron Johnson with six, Damond Threadgill with five and Ed Hood and Austin Kirkpatrick with two each.

“This conference is going to be a dog fight,” he said. “There won’t be any free lunches. We have got to learn to put games away. When we figure that our, we’re going to be alright.”
The team advances to 3-1 with the win.
