River blessing planned

Sts. George and Alexandra Orthodox Church of the Orthodox Church in America will celebrate The Feast of Theophany (Epiphany) with the annual blessing of the Arkansas River at 11 a.m. Jan. 6 at the Springhill Park pavilion in Barling. The park is located just off Arkansas 59 at 1700 Lock and Dam Road. At the conclusion of the service, a frozen cross will be blessed by the priest, Father Nicholas Roth, and will be thrown into the river. This symbolizes Jesus Christ’s cleansing of the waters with his baptism.

The blessing of the river will follow the Divine Liturgy service at 9 a.m. Jan. 6 at Sts. George and Alexandra, 7500 Mahogany Ave. in Fort Chaffee. The public is invited.
