New Caney Baptist Church hosted its first drive-thru live nativity scene last week.
Three separate scenes of the story were available for drivers the view as they passed on Highway 53.  The first scene consisted of the angel who appeared to Mary to announce the coming birth of Jesus. There followed by a depiction of Joseph and Mary and the manger scene.
New Caney pastor Ken Beaver said about 30 volunteers helped with production. Those included church members as well as other people from the community.
“It’s pretty neat,” Beaver said.  “It brings everyone together to experience the true meaning of Christmas.”
Debbie Smith, who played the role of the Virgin Mary, said she wants the kids to understand what Christmas is all about.  “It’s not just Santa Claus,” Smith said. “Christ was our real gift,” she said.
The planning for the nativity scene began in April and construction began in October.
Beaver said next year he would like to add a few more scenes. Those could include King Herod and a scene of the angel talking to Joseph.
Beaver said the church may consider doing similar Easter productions in the future.
